A minimum of 13 passengers lose their lives and 98 hurt in train crash in Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and management of the country's flagship government projects.

The disaster happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” declared the national leader.

The official reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official stated plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency concluded the year before. This rail line was a hallmark of his government's economic vision for the southern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The building of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were built at an accelerated speed, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently sparked ongoing concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an prior accident this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a key rival party demanded an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This pause was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."

In response, the head of state insisted that the train had been running in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and management of these strategic undertakings.
